Outstanding School improvement at Mnyakanya High School
Mnyakanya High School in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, has recently learned that it has obtained a remarkable 93.6 pass rate in the annual 2024 Matriculation (Matric) Examinations; the best ever results in the school’s history.
The year-on-year improvement at the school has been phenomenal – in 2016 only 16.4% of students passed. By 2017 this had risen to 58.5%, in 2020 to 72%, 2021 to 86% and in 2023 to 90.1%. There is little wonder that this remote rural school is gaining attention nationally.
110 students sat the national Matric exams. No less than 60 learners obtained a Bachelors Pass, which is the entry requirement to go to university, 30 learners obtained a Diploma Pass which is the entry requirement for Technical Colleges and 13 learners obtained the Higher Certificates which can provide access to Technical Colleges. 16 students obtained Distinctions in 2 or more subjects with Sisekelo Shandu gaining Distinctions in five different subject areas.
The Department of Education has invited Mnyakanya teachers to a series of celebration events that are scheduled in different parts of King Cetshwayo District Municipalities. 7 educators at the school gained a 100% pass rate in their subject area: TW Ndlanzi (Tourism), NC Nxumalo (Agriculture Science, TN Mkkhize (English Language), SV Ngubane (Geography), N Mngomezulu (History), NZ Zuma (Zulu Language) and Z Langa (Life Orientation).
The parents of Mnyakanya students came to school in great numbers to express their gratitude and excitement about the good results of their children.
Nokwanda Hlongwa's father was the first to arrive at school on the day when the results were released. He was overwhelmed with emotions at his daughter’s success and said:
“The words seem to be not enough to express my feelings of joy and how much I appreciate the work that has been done by Mnyakanya teachers for my daughter. I knew that my daughter's health condition needed a special care and parents’ support all the time. As her parents we did not expect such an incredible result! I wish to thank all Mnyakanya teachers and the principal for acting as my daughter's parents when I was miles away from her. I'm so proud that the Universities have not hesitated to accept her because of her good Matric results."
Nokwanda's father explained why he decided to choose Mnyakanya High School for his daughter even though the school was 180 miles (300 kilometres) away from their home. He said:
"I heard a group of women talking about a school called Mnyakanya in Nkandla which produces quality results, while I was in a bank queue in my local area. I was so interested. Because I didn't know the place or the school, I moved closer to them to get more information. They told me about many extra-curricular activities in this school. From there I started to look for the location and I'm happy that I have witnessed all that they said for myself."
Mnyakanya High School is bringing back hope to many parents of KZN about their children who find it difficult to achieve at school and others who have given up schooling and turned to substance abuse because of losing hope in life. The communities of the surrounding areas have negotiated with the Taxi owners to transport their children to Mnyakanya High School because the bus transport provided by the Government become overloaded. Parents have to pay for the taxis.
Mnyakanya High School enrolled 110 learners for matric exams in 2024. This was a huge number for the school with limited classrooms, teachers and furniture and resources. Learners had to be taught in overcrowded classrooms, with teachers providing additional lessons in the evenings and weekends.
It is not surprising that Mnyakanya High School is in demand and has admitted over 250 new learners in 2025 bringing total enrolment to 1050 students.
School Principal, Mr SV Ngubane, expressed his sincere thanks to all the educators and learners at Mnyakanya for their dedication and hard work saying:
“What we have achieved needs to be fully appreciated. But we need to continue working hard to achieve more in future, so that all learners will achieve what will make them change their family situation for better.”
The Department of Education Ward Manager Ms Priscilia Guliwe passed her words of praise and gratitude to all at the school. Encouraging teachers and students to continue their hard work, she said:
“I’m so proud to mention that Mnyakanya High School has become a talk of the nation, because of all the good news about what is happening in the school. In every corner you will hear good comments from people about Mnyakanya.”
Mnyakanya School together with St. Mary’s School, Menston (UK) are the founding schools of the Bambisanani Partnership and have worked closely together for the benefit of students in both schools for the past 18 years. Mnyakanya is now a very popular school not only for its outstanding examination results but for its sports activities, cultural activities, and international links and educational opportunities through the Bambisanani Partnership. The addition of Computer Literacy as a subject in the school curriculum by the Bambisanani Partnership and Rotary International has been a key factor in increased academic achievement at the school.
David Geldart from the Bambisanani Partnership added, “Mnyakanya School is a school that has been ‘turned around’. In the most difficult of circumstances, it has been transformed through excellent leadership. The teachers and students deserve the utmost praise and congratulations for their outstanding work. Many students travel great distances to attend the school, many routinely walk 2 hours to and from school each day because they want an education. Relatively few resources and class sizes of 60 plus are the norm. There is a shortage of teachers at the school and those that are there go the extra mile continually for their students by working additional hours before school, after school, weekends and holidays! The young people and their educators are an inspiration and students and teachers from other parts of the world have much to learn from their commitment, determination and resilience. This success is achieved against all the odds and is thoroughly deserved. There is no compliancy here, they are focussed on even greater success next year. The Bambisanani Partnership is honoured to be working with such a school and to have made a small contribution to its success. I shudder to think what this school, its educators and its learners would achieve if they had the resources that schools, educators and learners in more affluent parts of the world sometimes take for granted.”
Can you help The Bambisanani Partnership in 2025?
The Bambisanani Partnership is a multi-award-winning UK based charity that originated as a partnership between St. Mary’s Catholic School in Menston, UK and Mnyakanya High School in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa in 2006. The partnership, which is run entirely by volunteers, uses the power of sport as a catalyst to promote education, health, global citizenship and leadership has gained international acclaim for its work.
Background:
The Bambisanani Partnership is a multi-award-winning UK based charity that originated as a partnership between St. Mary’s Catholic School in Menston, UK and Mnyakanya High School in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa in 2006. The partnership, which is run entirely by volunteers, uses the power of sport as a catalyst to promote education, health, global citizenship and leadership has gained international acclaim for its work. The partnership now involves over 40 schools, colleges and universities in both the UK and South Africa. The University of Leeds, Leeds Trinity University and Newcastle College are key members of the partnership. In South Africa the partnership operates in the Nkandla region which one of most remote and deprived parts of the country with over 90% unemployment and one of highest Aids/HIV rates in the world. ‘Bambisanani’ is a Zulu word meaning ‘working hand in hand’ which aptly encapsulates the philosophy of the partnership which seeks to provide collaborative learning opportunities for young people in both countries. The partnership has been recognised as making important contributions to UN Sustainable Development Goals and is a founding member of Sport and Sustainability International.
Over the past 18 years more than 27,000 young people from the UK and South Africa (from primary school through to university) have participated in a variety of Bambisanani Partnership programmes and projects including ‘Leadership through Sport’, Sports Festivals’ Cycling to Success’, ‘Literacy through Sport’, ‘Numeracy through Sport’ ‘Art through Sport’, ‘Learning through Football’, ‘International Athletics Challenge’ and the joint training of Physical Education teachers and Sports Coaches.
Beyond this the charity has been instrumental in bringing water and computers to schools as well as rebuilding houses and providing university bursaries to disadvantaged young people; always working in partnership with the local community.
The work of the partnership has been highlighted at conferences throughout the world, including the Global Sport for All Summit held at the Vatican and at the International Olympic Academy in Greece. The Bambisanani Partnership was named as International Sport and Physical Education Charity of the Year 2023 and 2024.
Ambition for 2025 and funding requirements: Can you help?
In 2025 40 young people from St. Mary’s School, Menston, University of Leeds and Newcastle College will volunteer in South Africa developing existing programmes and introducing new ones. Between them the institutions and students have raised a remarkable £119,000 to fund their volunteering. We are not seeking funding for our volunteers; this is their responsibility and we believe that there is much learning to be gained from this process. These are remarkable young people who have a real desire to become global citizens and make a difference in the world, they are a constant inspiration to myself and the rest of the Bambisanani team. With £119,000 already in place we are seeking a further £26,500 to fund our priority projects on the ground in South Africa.
All of our projects are driven by community needs and engage local community members at all stages of planning and delivery. We have a policy of never funding 100% of any project. We always insist on an element of funding or contribution ‘in kind’ from South African sources. The partnership is absolutely committed to building capacity in the communities in which we work and empowering the people that we work with. Bambisanani means ‘working hand in hand’ and we are committed to that principle. All over the world I have seen ‘100% grants’ develop a ‘dependency culture’ within the communities that they are supposed to serve. This approach is frequently accompanied by a lack of real consultation with the local community - at best patronising and ultimately self-defeating; we operate differently.
Total funding requirement for 2025 = £145,500
Amount already raised for volunteering programmes = £119,000 (82% of total)
Remaining funding required for 2025 = £26,500 (18% of total)
In the year ahead we would like to develop nine community ‘needs led’ projects as identified below. There may be one that you might consider supporting in some way?
1. Cycling to Success
Our cycling project has proved a remarkable success in those remote, rural hills transforming lives as a means of transport, sport and recreation. Working in partnership with KZN Cycling (the Governing Body for Cycling in KZN) we aim to train 5,000 children (a year) how to both ride and maintain bikes. We need to raise £9,000 a year for the next two years which will be matched by KZN Cycling.
2. Thembinfundo Special School Water and Sanitation
is the latest school to become part of the Bambisanani Partnership. This remote rural Residential School has no access to water for toilet facilities – the situation is absolutely deplorable in terms of lack of hygiene and dignity; the environment is certainly not conducive to learning and desperately needs to be addressed asap. As a short-term emergency measure, we are installing two large water tanks at a cost of £1,700 but the longer-term solution is to bring clean water to the school via a Bore Hole – we are therefore seeking £5,000 for this purpose. Access to clean water would transform this school and the learning environment for the 200 children and their teachers.
3. Thembinfundo Special School Sport
We are also working to develop Physical Education and Sport at the school. We made a good start with this introducing some basic equipment and training which has had a significant impact. We are currently working with a number of agencies in South Africa to expand this programme at the school and we wish to introduce more teaching and learning opportunities. This next stage of development for sports and sensory equipment will cost £2,000. The development of Physical Education and Sport will radically improve the school experience for its learners.
4. Bambisanani International Athletics Challenge
This project started during Covid to link primary schools in the UK and in South Africa in a series of athletic challenges. Principals have hailed the programme as a tremendous success - improving academic performance, behaviour, attendance and self-esteem. The majority of the South African schools had no prior experience of athletics. £2300 is required to provide the basic equipment for the South African schools. £1,300 is available from South African sources and UK primary schools (fundraising events) so we need to raise £1,000 to make this programme happen for over 500 learners.
5. Leadership programmes
Our ‘leadership through sports programmes’ are our longest running programmes and they have proved an exceptional success in both primary schools and secondary schools. The medium of sport is a tremendously powerful vehicle for developing generic leadership skills. Many young people who have successfully completed this course have gone to use their skills in the wider community to great effect. We need to purchase £2000 of sports equipment each year to facilitate these programmes in both the primary and secondary schools. £1000 is already in place to fund this programme but another £1,000 is required to train 100 young Sports Leaders.
6. Literacy
We are supporting a KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education Department priority of developing Literacy in the remote rural areas. In the year ahead we would like to provide a further 500 books at a cost of £1,000.
7. University Bursaries
Each year we try and support at least two students, who, against all the odds, gain a university place, but cannot raise all the funding required. We are currently supporting two young ladies who are training to become teachers at the University of South Africa. They have both raised between 70 and 80% of course fees themselves and we will try and make up the shortfall (that will make the difference) i.e. £2,000.
8. Educational visits of South African students and teachers to the UK
Such visits have a tremendous positive impact, as indeed we saw in 2024, and would like to encourage further visits (hopefully annually) in the future by raising £2,000 to contribute towards costs.
9. Shoes for children that don’t have any
Despite walking great distances to school many children that we work with do not have shoes or shoes that fit them. Working with the My Walk charity we provide shoes made from recycled hospital waste at a cost of £1.53 (R35) a pair. In 2025 we aim to provide 500 more pairs of shoes. £265 is already in place so we need to raise a further £500.
Administration
Not the most exciting aspect of our work to fund but nevertheless vitally important as it ensures that all the above happens. With no staff to pay or premises to look after our administration costs are absolutely minimal. Our costs for the year ahead will be in the region of £3,000.
For the future we also have a longer-term plan to build a Football/Sports pitch near Mnyakanya School to serve both the school and the wider community. The land has already been gifted to us and the plans have been drawn up. The total cost of the project will be £85,000 with over half of the funding to come from South African sources. There is no such facility in the area; it has the potential to have a transformational impact on the lives of young people through all the benefits that sport can bring. We also have the opportunity to build an additional classroom for computer use at Mnyakanya School at a cost of £20,000.
I would be more than happy to supply further information if required and indeed to meet with you to discuss our programme and aspirations in more detail.
Via this link it is possible to make a ‘one off’ donation to the charity or indeed set up a monthly payment.

One learner told me that they were born unique and that sport was helping them to realise that anything was possible. These awards are very important in my school community.”
Former St. Mary’s Menston student and professional footballer Jordan Sinnott was a great supporter of the Bambisanani Partnership. Following his tragic death in 2020 three annual awards were established in his memory at Vumanhlamvu Primary School. Mr William Vilakazi, Principal of the school added, “It is difficult to express how important these awards are to our school. They are a focal point for our learners and inspire them to be the best that they can be. We remember Jordan at this time and his Mum, Melanie who sadly passed away last year. The Sinnott family and his friends must be strengthened in the knowledge that Jordan is continuing to inspire learners in this remote rural part of South Africa. This is the power of sport which we know was very important to Jordan.”

St. Mary’s Christmas Message to Mnyakanya High School 2024
This year has brought our school many blessings, the greatest
of which was the visitation by PK, Mazet, Eunice, Amahle and
Bayanda; our very own travellers from afar. They brought their
gifts of joy, laughter and love and distributed them abundantly
and freely. We give thanks for the riches our partnership brings
to all and the great sharing and exchange of God’s gifts. We
pray for the Mnyakanya community at this wonderful time of
year when we focus on the Holy Family and ask that God
continues to grace our combined efforts, as a partnership
family, bringing us closer together in heart mind and soul.
Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas.
With our love.
Your friends at St Mary's, Menston.
This is a message from Mnyakanya High School, a school in the Nkandla region of Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa.

A Warm Yorkshire Welcome for South Africans
South African teachers, Mrs Pk Zondi and Miss Mazet Langa from Mnyakanya High School and Mrs Eunice Mchunu from Umlazi Primary School together with students Amahle Nsbande and Bayanda Gcaba from Mnyakanya recently visited Leeds as part of the Bambisanani Partnership exchange programme. Mnyakanya School established the partnership with St. Mary’s, Menston 18 years ago. The visit was coordinated by Mrs Pk Zondi and Catherine Chattoe from St. Mary’s supported by Charlotte Wood, Barbara Pounder, David Farmer, Margaret Hattersley, Gerry Sayers, Brogan O’Connor and David Geldart.

During the one week stay the visitors participated in lessons at St. Mary’s, Menston and St. Joseph’s Primary School, Pudsey. They also toured the sights of Leeds and York as well as visiting Saltaire Village with local historian Andy Harrison-Beaumont and the Brontë Parsonage in Howarth with the benefit of expert, Diane Fare. The team also spent a day at key member of the Bambisanani Partnership, the University of Leeds, where they enjoyed the extensive facilities. The group were joined by many St. Marys students who have visited South Africa or will be visiting next year for an evening of Bowling and later in the week a bracing walk on Rombald’s Moor to the ‘Twelve Apostle Stones’. When visiting the Leeds Playhouse as special guests to watch A Raisin in the Sun, the visitors were stunned with an invitation from Emma Gill to have a backstage tour and meet several of the actors. As well as attending a service at York Minster the group were special guests at the annual St. Mary’s Mass of Welcome for new Year 7 students at St, Peter’s and Paul’s Church in Yeadon which happened to fall on Zulu Heritage Day. Whilst at St. Mary’s, the South African students taught Zulu to Year 7 students on International Language Day. Amahle and Bayanda also taught Zulu language at St. Josephs as well as Athletics. Over 40 members of the Bambisanani team in the UK attended a celebration meal with the South African guests at Tharavadu Restaurant in Leeds, a restaurant that has supported the partnership for several years. On the final day of the visit the visitors added much to St. Mary’s Open Day and were able to meet Graham Davies and Janet Kerr of the Rotary Club of Aireborough who have supported the partnership since it began. At a final lunch event the guests had the opportunity to meet 8-year-old Althaea Dickinson, who earlier in the year had organised a campaign to get over 1,000 reading books into South African primary schools and Graeme Collin who has been instrumental in providing kit for the Bambisanani Cycling programme in South Africa. It certainly was a very busy and exciting week which created many wonderful encounters.
Suzzi Garnet from the University of Leeds said, “Leeds Sport was delighted and honoured to host staff and pupils from Mnyakanya High School at the University of Leeds for the first time. Our visitors had lots of fun trying out various pieces of equipment in the Edge gym, followed by a raucous session on our climbing wall, experiencing both bouldering and rope climbing. A special lunch reception was followed by a tour of various prominent buildings on campus including the Brotherton Library, a lecture theatre and the Great Hall. It was particularly special that one of the pupils, 14-year-old Bayanda showed University staff and students around Mnyakanya back in 2023 and we got to return the favour last week!
15-year-old Bayanda and 17-year-old Amahle said that they were overwhelmed with joy when their dream to visit UK came true and that all their friends were surprised when their departure date was announced by the Principal at a school assembly.
An extremely enthusiastic Bayanda Gcaba commented: “I’m so excited that this visit to the UK was successful. When we started preparing for it by asking for donations and selling some snacks at school to raise money, many people did not believe that the trip could really be possible. Some people doubted us so our travels have surprised many people. I just cannot explain how much I enjoyed every single thing about this very wonderful visit. We learned so many things about how people in the UK behave and how young people achieve their goals. I especially loved visiting the theatre for the very first time to see the drama called ‘A Raisin in the Sun’. I also very much enjoyed learning about Titus Salt and how he cared for his workers and about Emily, Charlotte and Anne Bronté who were strong women and great writers. The university experience was amazing and I would like to study there one day. We learned so much all week and had great fun meeting so many kind and respectful people. All this wonderful experience wouldn’t have happened without the effort and support of Mrs Pk Zondi, our Bambisanani Partnership coordinator at school who helped to communicate with our relatives and community for assistance. I would also like to pass my thanks to all my family especially my grandmother Mashandu Gcaba and my father Siyabonga Gcaba who all encouraged me to take this trip. In conclusion, I wish to send my words of appreciation to all the Bambisanani UK team for their massive support and hospitality when we were there. It was a dream come true for me, I experienced so much and learned so much. I am inspired further and have many ambitions for the future.”
Amahle Nsibande still cannot quite believe her amazing adventure as she commented: “I just joined Mnyakanya High School last year in 2023. I was attracted by the Bambisanani Partnership even before I joined the school. Today I’m so excited to know that I received this opportunity to visit the UK as part of the partnership. We visited several schools and University of Leeds, sharing experiences and learning about each other’s cultures through sports and educational activities. I was so excited to meet new friends, participate in different events and visit different parts of Yorkshire. This trip broadened my horizons of thinking and left me inspired by the spirit of collaboration and mutual respect. I wish to thank all the UK Bambisanani team for all the love they showed to us. We don’t hesitate to say that every member of the team was willing to do so much for us with open hearts.”
Bayanda’s father and Amahle’s mother said that the travelling of their children to the United Kingdom gives them hope that there is still more to come for their children. Bayanda’s father said:
“My son’s experience to visit abroad has made all the Gcaba family to be proud of him. We believe that this is an indication that he will have a brighter future. I wish to thank all Mnyakanya teachers who enabled this to happen. It is my wish that he continues to travel to different places, so that he will learn from the young people of other countries. I also hope that the Bambisanani Partnership will continue to develop our children for a better future.”
Miss Zanele Langa, a teacher at Mnyakanya High School said: “It was indeed a great pleasure to visit our friends in the UK. We share many great memories and created many more,. This was another fantastic opportunity for young people of both countries to ‘work together and learn together’ as is the aim of the Bambisanani Partnership. Our young people had the opportunity to attend lessons but also to teach lessons and coach sport. We learnt many new things about history and culture in Leeds York, Saltaire and Howarth. Learning about Titus Salt and the Brontë sisters was inspirational as was the visit to Leeds Playhouse. Interacting with students, teachers and families made us feel welcomed. Visiting the University of Leeds was a great experience for both learners and teachers. Touring different places helped us learn more about the life in UK. The genuinely warm welcome that was given to us absolutely everywhere in Yorkshire was truly amazing.; we were treated like VIP’s! We felt as if we were at home, and even now we are convinced that we have our second home in the UK; the true spirit of Ubuntu surrounded us. Words cannot express how much we appreciate all that our UK friends did for us. We hope and pray that this partnership will grow even stronger and reach to different generations.”
Mrs Pk Zondi, the Bambisanani Partnership coordinator at Mnyakanya said, “It is still difficult to convince my mind that the visit to the UK took place and was so successful, since it had been our dream for many years. The Mnyakanya visit to the UK has drawn the attention of many people to the partnership between UK schools and Mnyakanya High school. Many teachers and learners who have recently joined Mnyakanya High School have developed strong interest in the Bambisanani Partnership because of this visit. The families of the students who were part of the visit are extremely proud about the experience gained by their children. We believe that the life of these two students will change for better, and their way of thinking will never be like before. I do not have enough words to appreciate all the UK Bambisanani team for the love they showed to us, for orientating us with almost all parts of their life, places and cultures. The hospitality we received was AMAZING! The visit has taught us so much about the people, the culture and life in UK. There is something very special about the Bambisanani Partnership, not least its ability to bring people together, broaden perspectives and change lives for the better. It creates friendships and understanding of other people.”
Member of the Bambisanani team, Gerry Sayers said “It was my great pleasure to help to transport our friends from Mnyakanya School during their stay. We had such a good time chatting on the journeys to the various events which had been organised for them. I was able to catch up with Pk and Mazet who I had not seen since 2007 when I visited Mnyakanya. I also acted as a tour guide describing the geography of Leeds in which all were very interested. What a great time we had together learning from each other, enjoying each other’s company and making very special memories.”
The Mnyakanya High School Principal, Mr Siyabonga Ngubane, forwarded words of praise and gratitude to students Bayanda Gcaba and Nsibande Amahle who worked very hard to raise funds for themselves to visit United Kingdom to represent their school and their country. He further mentioned that this visit will strengthen the Bambisanani Partnership even more. He said: “It was so exciting to see our learners in posted videos, enjoying themselves participating in classroom, sports, cultural and social activities. I wish to thank all the Bambisanani team in UK for taking such good care of our students and teachers while they were there.”
Pricillia Guliwe from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education praised all involved in the visit for their vision and determination to make it happen and said that it is her dream that more schools in the remote rural areas had the opportunity to visit the UK.
David Geldart, Founder and CEO of the partnership said, “Huge thanks to Catherine and the team for going well beyond the extra mile in organising a wonderfully varied, action packed week for our guests. Enormous credit must go to Pk and Mazet who despite considerable challenges, worked tirelessly in South Africa to make the visit possible. Special thanks to many of our sponsors and supporters who stepped in at late notice to make this a fantastic experience for all involved. The wonderful hospitality and kindness were typified by Bambisanani Trustee, Barbara Pounder, who provided her house to accommodate our guests. Pk, Mazet, Eunice, Amahle and Bayanda were outstanding ambassadors for their country and we learned much from them during the course of their stay. Such educational exchanges, based on mutual respect and learning, have the potential to broaden horizons, change world views and promote genuine global citizenship. Long may this continue in Bambisanani visits to and from South Africa.”
Eleanor wins Bambisanani Leadership Award in memory of Sibonelo Magwaza
Bambisanani Partnership Awards in memory of Sbonelo Magwaza are presented annually at Mnyakanya High School and St. Mary’s, Menston; the two founding schools of the Bambisanani Partnership.
Bambisanani Partnership Awards in memory of Sibonelo Magwaza are presented annually at Mnyakanya High School and St. Mary’s, Menston; the two founding schools of the Bambisanani Partnership.
Sibonelo was an outstanding young leader from Mnyakanya School who had completed the Bambisanani Leadership with St. Mary’s students in 2010, sadly he died a few months later. The award has a very special meaning and importance in both schools.
This year’s winner from St. Mary’s is Eleanor Rock who travelled to South Africa as a member of the St. Mary’s volunteer team last year. Catherine Chattoe, Bambisanani Coordinator at St. Mary’s presented the prestigious award at the schools annual Leavers Mass and said, “Eleanor is indeed an outstanding leader who has demonstrated excellent leadership skills and commitment to the partnership. She made a remarkable impact in South Africa making many new friends that she still stays in contact with. Eleanor’s kindness and compassion always shines through; she does all that she does with a beautiful smile. She is an exceptional young person.”
Whilst in South Africa last year Eleanor made a strong friendship with the winner of the Sibonelo Magwaza Award at Mnyakanya School. Bayandu Gcabu.
On hearing that Eleanor was to receive the award at St. Mary’s Bayandu forwarded a message which Mrs Chattoe read out at the presentation event:
Eleanor receives award from Catherine Chattoe’
“I wish to pass on my congratulations to my amazing friend. We became such good friends when they came to work at my school. I am happy that our friendship continues even when we are 6,000 miles apart. They are my first friend from overseas. She helped me with many things and did not hesitate to support me when I was trying to teach tennis to my local primary school children.
We shared everything together even eating our lunch. I learnt a lot from their kindness and discipline. We shared lots of information about our countries and I loved teaching them my Zulu language. Keep on doing good things my special friend. I am also working very hard at school. Please wait for me, I promise to come and visit you some day to see your country. This student has empowered the students at Mnyakanya High School to believe in themselves and to have and follow a dream.”
Congratulations to Eleanor and indeed to Bayandu; two exceptional young leaders who are an inspiration to others. We will follow their progress with great interest!
Mnyakanya High School do it again!
Mnyakanya High School in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, has recently learned that it has obtained a remarkable 90% pass rate in the annual Matriculation (Matric) Examinations, despite many challenges that were faced by the school in the last year.
Mnyakanya High School in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, has recently learned that it has obtained a remarkable 90% pass rate in the annual Matriculation (Matric) Examinations, despite many challenges that were faced by the school in the last year.
Students celebrate their results
This result equals the school's record breaking 90% pass rate of 2023. In 2022 the pass rate was a commendable 86% and in 2021 it was 72%. It is not so many years ago that the pass rate was half that of the amazing results of this year and last so there is little wonder that this remote rural school is gaining the attention of the nation.
In 2023, Mnyakanya had 112 students who sat the national Matric exams. This was a huge number for the school with limited classrooms, teachers and resources. Learners had to be taught in overcrowded classrooms with teachers providing additional lessons in the evenings and weekends.
Star pupil Busisiwe Bhengu
The 2023 results surprised many people when 58 learners obtained a Bachelors Pass, which is the entry requirement to go to university, 31 learners obtained a Diploma Pass which is the entry requirement for Technical Colleges and 12 learners obtained the Higher Certificates which can provide access to Technical Colleges.
Busisiwe Bhengu who achieved the highest scores with no less than 6 Distinctions In her subjects, broke into tears of joy when she received the news of her achievements. Her grandmother, Mashezi Bhengu who takes care of her family by selling snacks at school said:
"I am so grateful that Busisiwe has broken the record by achieving such high results. I am so proud to know that she is the first student to obtain 6 distinctions in her subjects throughout the history of Mnyakanya High school."
Busisiwe's father, Mafuna Bhengu, passed the words of gratitude to the school principal and said:
"I'm so excited about the work done by the teachers for my daughter. I don’t have anything in my hands, but I wish I can do something for the school to show my appreciation. I am speechless, not knowing what to do because of excitement.
I wish to say a massive thanks to you Mr Principal and your staff, God bless you."
Mnyakanya High School results continue to attract students from different parts of the province and from other provinces. The school enrolment of 2024 has risen up to 950 students compared to 859 of 2023. There are many students who applied and could not be taken because the school is running short of enough space and furniture.
The Mnyakanya community is working hand in hand with the school to provide accommodation closer to the school for those students who wish to move to the area to attend the school. Again, teachers of the school are proving additional classes to cope with the massive increased demand.
Mr SV Ngubane, Principal of Mnyakanya congratulates students on their outstanding results
Mnyakanya School together with St. Mary’s School, Menston (UK) are the founding schools of the Bambisanani Partnership and have worked closely together for the benefit of students in both schools for the past 17 years. Mnyakanyal is now a very popular school not only for its outstanding examination results but for its sports activities, cultural activities and international links and educational opportunities through the Bambisanani Partnership. The addition of Computer Literacy as a subject in the school curriculum by the Bambisanani Partnership and Rotary International has been a major factor in increased academic achievement at the school.
The Chairperson of the school governing body, Mr Sguda Bhengu said:
"I am feeling very proud to be the Chairperson the school that is doing so well with its results. In all cases or events when I’m expected to introduce myself, I do not forget to p roudly mention that I am the Chairperson of Mnyakanya school governing body. This make my status to be respected even greater in the community, just because of the good work done at Mnyakanya”.
The delighted Principal of Mnyakanya, Mr SV Ngubane said, “2023 was the toughest year with many challenges. The Matric results could not be predicted at all because of these challenges. Teachers were extremely overloaded with work because the school was understaffed. The results that we obtained are from hard work and dedication of teachers and learners who sacrificed their time of seeing their families during holidays and during the week-ends. I cannot explain the joy that I have in my heart about what we achieved."
Students doing extra study after school
David Geldart from the Bambisanani Partnership added, “I am almost lost for words at the remarkable continued progress at Mnyakanya School. The teachers and students deserve the utmost praise and congratulations for their outstanding work. Many students routinely walk two hours to and from school each day because they want an education. The Bambisanani Partnership is honoured to be working with such a school and to have made a small contribution to its success that we can all learn from.”

It was a great honour this year to unveil and introduce a completely new annual award at Mnyakanya School: The Heather Read Award for Outstanding Resilience. At the presentation ceremony Mrs Catherine Chattoe, Bambisanani Coordinator at St. Mary’s visiting South Africa said:
“Heather Read loved the Bambisanani Partnership and was a great supporter of the charity. The Bambisanani Partnership has a longstanding special relationship with Rotarians in the UK, South Africa and internationally and Heather was instrumental in so many of our joint projects that have transformed young people’s lives in South Africa. Heather was the first female President of the UK’s Aireborough Rotary Club in its history of more than 60 years. Heather was a volunteer at a charity shop for a cancer Hospice. She was a vice principal at a special school. A church warden at St Peter’s Parish Church in Rawdon. A school governor at St Peter’s Church of England Primary. Best exam results ever bring joy to Mnyakanya School
There were remarkable scenes of joy recently at Mnyakanya High School in rural KwaZulu-Natal when the annual Matriculation (Matric) results were announced with the school gaining its best results ever.
There were remarkable scenes of joy recently at Mnyakanya High School in rural KwaZulu-Natal when the annual Matriculation (Matric) results were announced with the school gaining its best results ever.
Together with St. Mary’s School, Menston in the UK, Mnyakanya helped found the Bambisanani Partnership in 2006. Two years ago, 72% of students passed the Matric exam, which was the best to date, last year the record was broken again with 86% of students passing the exam. This year has seen the school make even further progress with a record 90.5% of students gaining the coveted pass.
The national Matric exam is based on Grade 12 students (final year) having to gain passes in a wide range of individual subject areas. Of 105 students at Mnyakanya, 54 obtained a ‘Bachelor Pass’ which is the entry requirement for university. 28 students achieved a ‘Diploma Pass’ which is the entry requirement for Technical Colleges and 14 students gained the ‘Higher Certificate’ which can provide access to Vocational Colleges.
The spectacular year on year improvement in attainment has brought widespread praise for the school from all parts of the province and beyond. Over the past three years, enrolment at the school has almost doubled with students often travelling many miles, and others even relocating to attend the school. All this has been achieved in the context of the school serving one of the most challenging remote, rural areas in the country with high levels of deprivation, unemployment and health issues. Add to this the impact of Covid, water shortages and daily power outages then what is happening at Mnyakanya is nothing short of remarkable. Teachers at the school have relatively limited resources, yet provide many extra hours of teaching and support for students late into the evening and at weekends.
The Circuit Chief Education Specialist Mr SW Mthethwa visited the school in person to pass on his congratulations: “I decided to leave all that I was supposed to do in my office to come and pass on my sincere words of gratitude to all the teachers who worked extremely hard to shine a light on the name of our circuit, our district and our province as a whole. The hard work and commitment of teachers and learners is highly recognised by everyone.”
The Principal of Mnyakanya School, Mr SV Ngubane said: "It is an honour for us as a school to get these results. These are the results of hard work from both teachers and learners. The commitment of our teachers and students to their work was extraordinary. Our teachers sacrificed their own spare time that they would have been spent with their families, in order to teach our students. Without their remarkable effort and dedication, we wouldn’t have obtained this pass percentage.”
Mrs Pk Zondi a teacher and the Bambisanani Partnership co-ordinator at Mnyakanya said: “Words cannot explain the joy that the Mnyakanya community has because of these the results. They make everybody proud to be at Mnyakanya. It is also amazing that student enrolment has increased by almost 50% in 2023 because of our continued improvement and growing reputation. With the help of the Bambisanani Partnership and Rotary International we have been able to introduce computers to the school and computer-based subjects; this is helping to transform learning and raise levels of aspiration. Such developments are improving the self-esteem of our learners and their hope for the future. I wish to thank everyone who has contributed positively towards the development of our school."
David Geldart, Founder of the Bambisanani Partnership added, “This success is remarkable but not surprising. At Mnyakanya we have teachers that go the extra mile every day for their students. We have students that are prepared to walk two hours to and from school each day because they value and appreciate education. We have been able to bring the internet and computers to the school and the teachers and learners have seized the opportunity; opportunities that many young people in the world would take for granted. Given the new resources it is not at all surprising that these intelligent and resourceful young people are now achieving more. Since the beginning of this partnership, I have been constantly inspired and humbled by the determination and desire of Zulu students to study and learn. Students from other parts of the world have much to learn from these outstanding young people. Massive congratulations must go to the wonderful teachers and learners at Mnyakanya School. These glorious results are nothing less than they deserve for all their hard work!”
