£470 was raised at the now annual Bambisanani concert on Friday, the evening was a tremendous success with some stunning performances from our very own St. Mary’s students and an amazing set from The Leeds Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra (LYJRO).
The monies raised will be used to support the work of The Bambisanani Partnership in South Africa and LYJRO’s work in Germany. It was a fabulous evening with a showcase of brilliant musical performances.

The night showcased individual talent from St Mary's students with solos, duets and small group ensembles.

Students and staff from St. Mary’s last week hosted an evening of musical entertainment to raise money for the Bambisanani Partnership, a unique partnership with Mnyakanya High School situated in one of South Africa’s poorest rural areas which uses sport to promote education, health, global citizenship and leadership.
The ‘Spirit of Ubuntu’ concert featured musical ensembles from St. Mary’s, Cardinal Heenan, the Madrigal singing group and the Leeds Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra (the co-hosts of the evening, raising money for their own projects in South Africa).
The quality of the music was truly outstanding and the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by a large and very appreciative audience.

- Virtue
- Goodness
- Kindness
UBUNTU EXAMPLE:
A teacher proposed a game to children of an African tribe. He put a basket of fruit near a tree and told the kids that the first one to reach the fruit would win them all. When he told them to run they all took each other's hands and ran together, then sat together enjoying the fruits. When asked why they ran like that, as one could have taken all the fruit for themselves, they said, "Ubuntu, how can one of us be happy if all the others are sad?"
Ubuntu is a philosophy that can be summed up as "I am because we are."
EXPLAINING UBUNTU
You can't be human all by yourself, and when you have ubuntu you are known for your generosity.
We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world.

The now annual event featured musical ensembles from St. Mary’s, Cardinal Heenan and the Leeds Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra (the co-hosts of the evening, raising money for their own projects in South Africa). The music ranged from Jazz, courtesy of both LYJRO and a collaboration between St. Mary’s and Cardinal Heenan’s Jazz Groups, to various vocal numbers and opening the evening: St. Mary’s very own Ukulele Orchestra.
The event was extremely well received, with comments from the audience mentioning the relaxed yet lively atmosphere of the evening, whilst raising funds for both worthy causes. All the acts of the evening provided something different, treating the audience to a spectacular evening of entertainment.
